Universal Circuit - July 2010
*We open up to the the Battle Chamber in the Peter Venkman Memorial Arena and immediately hear a disembodied voice. Is it a ghost?
No I'm not a ghost, fans. Nor is this a LAWL show. You're hearing from an actual person - This is your usual gracious host, John Randolph and welcome to the July Circuit Show! Drake and I thought it would save some time if we didn't keep cutting back and forth from the arena matches to the studio commentary so you'll just be hearing my voice. We'll still have occasional face to face interviews in the studio, though hopefully not with Jean DuBreil ever again. And as these matches were recorded in the past and I'm just doing voice over anyway...well, why not combine the two! Like peanut butter and chocolate...or nuts and gum. Speaking of nuts, let's see what crazy stuff we'll see in the ring tonight. Here's the card!"
*A graphic comes onto the Battle-Tron listing the matches*
Match #1: Juan Leche vs. Julian Caesaro
Match #2: Pyro Dean vs. PerfectShawn Stevens
Match #3: Flare Brothers vs. Golden Pair
Match #4: Corey O'Brian vs. "Majin" Black Omen
Match #5: Karl Wunderlin vs. Koji Keo'ke
We're gonna start with some fast paced, high flying action as former PW-W Junior Champion Juan Leche faces Julian Caesaro, a man who has captured titles all over the world including being the current IGL Intercontinental Champion. We still do not know exactly why Julian attacked Leche a few months back before Juan's match with Jin Onusurai but judging by recent comments, it seems that Ceese wants to make a bigger name for himself in UBL and use Leche as a springboard. Leche was a NEXUS Title Tournament Finalist and is well known and respected by many in the locker room here and by the fans. While Julian has been known to play to the fans in other promotions, he appears to be very serious and ambitious here, along with his Perfect Royalty ally, Perfect Shawn Stevens, who we'll be seeing in action later. But did Julian make a mistake by attacking Leche to get his attention, angering him, rather then just asking for a match? Julian is not the first arrogant wrestler Leche has ever faced, nor is he necessarily faster then Leche. But he is hungry and that makes Julian extremely dangerous. Let's see how Leche responds.

The lightning speed of both competitors isn't just seen in their high flying moves but their ability to reverse each other seemingly out of nowhere. Within a minute of Julian attempting to roll up Leche, Leche did the same thing to Julian and got the win!!
Juan Leche (O) [Reversal roll-up pin - 17:57] (X) Julian Caesaro
And Julian is NOT happy with how this ended. He feels cheated, he's even screaming that Leche 'grabbed his tights', although it looked more likely that Julian did earlier. Leche is brushing it off and going backstage but he is attacked by Perfect Shawn Stevens who drags him back into the ring where Julian and him stomp Leche until Pyro Dean and Acid Rain come to Leche's rescue!! Pyro Dean is set to face PerfectShawn next so whether Dean and Acid are friends with Leche or not, I think Dean just wants a fair one on one encounter and to show Perfect Royalty that these antics won't fly in the next match. In either case, it's good to see someone standing up to Julian and Shawn. But Shawn doesn't appear as happy as I am about this development. And he immediately gets in Pyro Dean's face. Shawn is a very decorated champion, having won titles around the world and in the current AMBITION promotion. Pyro Dean has also tasted gold, with Acid Rain, as Tag Team Champions in a number of promotions. These two have never faced each other but they sure have reason to do so now as they get right into it!

A very tough match for both men as Shawn appeared more angry and offended that his attack with Julian was broken up. I think Dean may have been better off, at least in terms of this match, coming in when Shawn and Julian were done! But them being "done", may have meant the same for Leche's career. Sometimes doing the right thing for a fellow wrestler is worth a little added aggression from your opponent. Hopefully we see a rematch between these two in the future.
Pyro Dean (X) ["Perfection Personified" - 14:24] (O) PerfectShawn Stevens
Our next match is a rematch. The Flare Brothers wrestled the Golden Pair to a 30 minute time limit draw during Orochi-O's TV Episode 13. Both sides wanted another go and Drake granted them one here, with a 45 minute time limit. We're hoping the two can settle their score and a clear winner can come out. A rather sizable tag division is being built in UBL right now but Drake is very mum as to why. Considering the Battalion just ended and another one is not expected for years, many wrestlers are understandably curious as to what is being planned with the signing of so many new teams of this caliber. The Flare Brothers come to us from Silencer Championship Wrestling, the same promotion where Silent Sword arrived from...still no word from him, thank you FTS! Jack Flare is actually the SCW Heavyweight Champion but Joe is not to be underrated either as he was very effective in the recent SCW Trios Tournament. On the other side of the ring, we have two very physical and gruff men. Charles Langford is a top contender in Dragon Pro for their Dragon's Head Title and Jasper Woodruff well, no one wants gold more then him. No one. These two aren't easily phased or intimidated either, they'll bring the fight right to you. Let's see how each team adjusted their strategy from the first match in order to put this one away with a win on their side.

Things totally broke down at the end between these teams. It looked like the Flares were going to walk away with the win but the Golden Pair used a little referee confusion, a little double teaming, and a gold miner with calloused, rough hands to put this match away. I would not want to be in the grasp of Jasper Woodruff, that's for sure. You gotta hand it to both teams for their teamwork here but I wonder if this was the decisive win that Drake was looking for. It wouldn't surprise me to see another rematch but for now the Golden Pair can boast an impressive showing.
Flare Brothers (X) ["Golden Grip" - 24:35] (O) Golden Pair
Speaking of "impressive showings", the next two men are quickly molding the Reserve Roster to their image. Corey O'Brian came to UBL with the desire to enter and win the Universal Championship. Unfortunately for him, the timing didn't work out regarding his entry and he has been on the Reserve Roster looking to get to the top of this fed anyway he can. He defeated Hiro Hirada in two matches, the latter being a triple threat and is now faced with the tall task of facing 'Majin' Black Omen - somewhat of an enigma. We know he lives for the fight but we are not aware of any further goals. Does he want the NEXUS Championship? The Universal Championship? It does not seem that Titles have meaning to him. But when he chooses you to fight, you know that is an honor. And he has chosen Corey. Meanwhile, as much as Drake seems to dislike Corey for his comments about Geese, he begrudgingly realizes the level the man is on. As a result, the winner of this rivalry between Corey and Majin will face the winner of the Caesaro/Leche rivalry for the next #1 Contendership to the NEXUS Title. Four men have a chance at getting that shot but they have to get past their rivals and then the winner of the other rivalry. Gene Starr is waiting and after the shenanigans we saw from Shady, I think Gene is itching to get a real challenge. I think any of the four can provide that, and we'll see what these two can do against each other.

Corey and Omen just had an incredibly hard hitting affair. I thought Omen had the match on a few occasions but Corey's resilience won out. In the end, it was Corey applying that Sharpshooter as soon as he saw an opening and it was just too much for Omen to fight out of. Omen will have a chance at redemption soon but Corey showed again why he is at the top of many fan's rankings for UBL wrestlers.
Corey O'Brian (O) ["Sharpshooter"- 20:10] (X) 'Majin' Black Omen
And our main event in some ways is a curious one. While Karl Wunderlin IS a former NEXUS Champion and certainly someone whose well respected for his in ring abilities, he is on a bad losing streak. Ever since he lost the Title back to Gene last November, he hasn't won a match in four tries! So putting him in the main event, when we already know Drake is angry at him, is a strange move. Furthermore, Koji Keo'ke is still on the Front Lines roster. While he comes very heavily endorsed due to his work in FPCPP, and already won a match, defeating Toshio Matsumura at O's TV, he is still a UBL rookie. So getting the main event slot is certainly presumptuous by Drake but apparently he has a reason for it. And it also appears Drake is the referee for this match so whatever reason he has, he'll be up close to observe it. Let's see what transpires here. Given the high impact striking of both men, it should be a very physical contest.

Ok, I guess I understand now why Drake had confidence in them for a main event. Cause that was very close to being the Reserve Roster match of the year so far. Not only did Koji show us what he was capable of, but he brought out a side of Karl we hadn't seen in a while! It certainly was a far cry from the match against Chuck Madrox where Karl seemed unable to mount anything resembling an offense. But these two just went at it for over twenty minutes and kept going until Koji hit his finisher right in the middle of the ring. What an incredible effort from both men and the fans are LIVID for what they just saw..
Koji Keo'ke (O) ["Kilauea Buster" - 22:53] (X) Karl Wunderlin
It looks like Drake has a microphone and is holding Koji's hand up. Meanwhile Karl slowly walks backstage. He again appears frustrated, like he has over the last few shows but maybe he isn't overreacting since his boss is in the ring right now..
[Drake:] "Well, I think you can all see why Geese scouted and signed Koji Keo'ke to the UBL. This is a man who represents what it means to be a UBL wrestler. Physicality, resilience, tenacity, passion. Unfortunately where one excels, the opponent falls. And that brings me to Karl Wunderlin."
Karl stops in place and turns around, confused.
[Drake:] "Do you remember what I told you after the last show? That your losing streak was unacceptable and if it continued unabated, there would be dire consequences."
Uh oh. Why...why is he saying this? Karl just wrestled one of his best matches ever!
[Drake:] "I also told the world that with the number of hungry wrestlers on the Front Lines, I could not afford to keep the truly motivated and skilled ones on that developmental roster when they should be competing with the best on the Main Reserves. But a bloated main roster is not a happy or profitable one, Mr. Wunderlin. And for every wrestler that moves up...there inevitably...
The fans aren't liking this one bit. And Karl's eyes are starting to glaze over.
[Drake:] "Must be a wrestler that moves down to even things out. Effective immediately, Koji Keo'ke is now on the Main Reserve Roster....
The fans ARE liking this one. But we all know where this is going.
[Drake:] "And Karl Wunderlin, former NEXUS Champion, a fallen angel in the realm of professional wrestling, is being demoted to the Front Lines."
I can't believe this. And neither can Karl. He almost looks like a zombie right now, the man has no expression. No anger, frustration, rage, sadness, nothing. It's like he's numb to the world, uncomfortably numb! I just...
[Drake:] "That will conclude our show tonight, thank you to Koji for showing what UBL is capable of. I expect great things from you, continued great things."
Drake glanced at Karl when he said that. Koji is a little unsure what to do here as he has no ill will towards Karl, he even seems a bit sorry that his own promotion had to come at the expense of Karl's position. But it isn't Koji's fault. Heck, Drake didn't tell Karl this was going to happen if he lost. He just sprung it on him now! The warning he gave earlier wasn't this specific.
And Karl is very slowly walking out. I think I may have seen a small shudder go through his body but he didn't even register it. There is still no emotion on his face. And later on, I heard that he didn't even walk back to his locker room. He simply left the building and just kept walking. I don't know where he could go, there's not much out there in the wild.
What really bugs me is that a man just wrestled one of the best matches of his career here and even though he lost, he shouldn't be demoted to a roster that is mainly for newcomers. And that's not to take anything away from the Front Lines, they are all very talented and capable with bright futures. We just saw what Koji could do, after all, and congratulations to him, for sure. And we saw Jin Onusurai get elevated to this roster earlier their year too. I don't think Karl should have been demoted but Koji surely deserves the promotion. Both men deserve accolades for that match. But Drake is being ironfisted with having a very tight revolving door policy between the two rosters. I just can't help but wonder if there are better choices, less active wrestlers, to demote then Karl. Especially after the herculean effort he just showed.
And how many wrestlers on the Main Reserves have to be extra protective of and paranoid about their spots with these new rules? Is THIS the true reason Drake made this the main event? Not just cause he thought the match would deliver and Koji would raise his game...but that demoting Karl would send a message to everyone in UBL about needing to be even more competitive then before? With the Battalion roster merging into the Reserves, we knew there would be some challenges but this just put everyone on notice. The younger wrestlers are a threat to you and if you lose too often, you may be demoted.
Fans, I think we're in for a particularly chaotic time in UBL and that's not even factoring in FTS being on our next show in August! We'll see you then in addition to Orochi-O's TV! Also stay tuned next week as OG-Joshi brings you Illumination thanks to the lovely and talented Coach Jean Carter.
