Session 2 - Boot Camp Part 2
- by Matt Rivers
Boot Camp Part 1 kicked off the toughest two weeks of training and discipline that the Front Lines wrestlers chosen for the Basic Training program ever had. Assistant Trainer Juan Leche was impressed with most everyone's efforts and has already given very useful lessons to the roster. I'm hoping accelerated improvement is evident tonight even though I am sympathethic to the fact that people absorb knowledge at their own rates.
Match 1 - Luke Kisiera vs. Armel St. Martin
This is the first official match of Luke's trial series on this roster. Drake wanted to put Luke up against Jin Onusurai given how the Battle Royale ended last show but I thought that was too tall a task for him seeing as how Jin almost defeated me. And since Luke was competing for a spot on this roster, I felt it only appropriate for him to face someone else who was right on the cusp of being chosen. Armel St. Martin and Luke have about the same number of matches under their rather loose belts in UBL. While Luke has proven his intensity, and heart, against any opponents who mean his friends and him considerable harm, he still can struggle in the ring against those who hold no ill will toward him. Also, Luke needs to become more adept at the "sport" aspect of pro wrestling and doing so against an opponent who means him no harm but simply wishes to win should help.
Luke's struggle is once again seen in his inability to keep up with or counter the lightning fast Armel. Luke is being bumped around as if he were facing three opponents at once. But you have to give him credit for his craftiness in ...break dancing? Luke is attempting a capoeira move to counter Armel's and while it isn't quite as graceful, it goads Armel into doing the same. As Armel begins to do something similar to break dancing, Luke rolls him up for the quick pin! Luke somehow just escaped this match with a win and while Armel is a little angry, he appears to realize a break dance contest may not have been the best thing to attempt while being in the driver's seat of this match. Luke's ingenuity saved us against Nightmare and Dokuja at Ragnarok and earns him this victory tonight. But he still has a lot of work to do on his wrestling technique and strategy, despite his cleverness.
Match 2 - Rapbot 3K/Diss Mastah Droid vs. Thomas Mills/Calvin Corbett
While a few teams have been granted specific slots on this roster, like Thomas and Calvin, we still will be using other teams to keep variety. The "Rapbots" are sillier then I like but they have proven they have some ability when they concentrate on top of their natural physical ability...as robots.
I'm gonna shoot straight with you all. I don't think they're actual robots. But I also haven't examined them to get proof that they are wearing costumes. So until i can, I'll take them at their word. I know Japan has done wonders with robotics though I haven't the clue why revolutionary Japanese robots would be obsessed with hip hop music. Just know that once I get proof of this all being a silly gimmick, I'm cutting them from the roster, abilities or not.
And they do seem very competent in the ring, with DMD making extensive use of his speed and striking edge over Thomas Mills. And Mills just got sent down from what looked like a very quick but light punch. You know what? This just isn't right. He barely touched Mills.
*Matt goes into ring to stop match and declare it a no contest.*
Either the Rapbots are wearing metal costumes or they are dangerous themselves. We can't have wrestlers being attacked by metal structures whether they are 'natural' or not. I'm putting an end to this match. This isn't so much about me not liking comedy wrestling as much as wanting to avoid serious injury. Plus, we can't allow this display to encourage other volatile wrestlers to start wearing dangerous gear to the ring.
Match 3 - El Verde Fantasma vs. Tyler Alexander
Verde and Tyler had a very memorable series of violent encounters at last show's Battle Royale and there were some words exchanged. Tyler dropped Verde on his head and Verde eliminated Tyler. Since Tyler's elimination was the first one of the match, he appeared a little salty. I think he's still irritated how his match at Battle Formation ended. Given his past, I'm hoping Tyler can look beyond his anger and concentrate on the match at hand.
Tyler has a rough time concentrating on Verde's offense due to the speed he possesses. But Tyler isn't a slouch either and uses his boxing ability, that I believe FPCPP saw early on, to finally catch Verde with a hard left cross that spins and then drops Verde. From there, Tyler keeps Verde on the ground with an all out assault of mounted strikes, only letting up to congratulate himself. Big mistake.
Verde is way too quick for anyone to celebrate til after the match is over. Verde catches Tyler coming back with a dropkick while still laying on the mat. That has to be one of the darndest things I've ever seen. He somehow jumped off the mat while practically laying down. Maybe he's a robot. It knocked Tyler back into the turnbuckle where Verde then hits a running flip kick. But you need more then that to knock Tyler down and as Verde is landing from the flip, Tyler runs at him from the turnbuckle with a nasty yakuza kick. Tyler didn't waste any time here and hit a Tyler Driver II for the surprising quick pinfall here. It was clear Tyler had a lot to prove and also that Verde may want to bulk up just a bit to get more impact from his moves.
I'm going to recommend that Tyler train with Goro Yamashita when he's out of the hospital and feeling better. Goro has mastered the art of combining boxing and wrestling. Tyler is getting there but could use a mentor that has hybrid experience and incredible poise like Goro.
Match 4 - Boot Camp Royale B
Dean Annay vs. Lucha La Barba vs. Hannibal II vs. Mickey Revell vs. RYOMA vs. Tenshi
The main event for the next training session will be the winner of last show's facing the winner of tonight's Battle Royale. The winner of that match will get a Field Leader Title shot against me at the following show. I look forward to facing either wrestler as both are near the top of this class.
