UBL - AND - Kirin Dojo PRESENT:
BATTLE FORMATION 2013 - "Get back in formation!"
*The show starts with the video that announced Battle Formation. After that concludes, we open to a small set with commentator, and all around good guy, John Randolph sitting in a comfortable looking chair.*
[John:] "Welcome to the third edition of Battle Formation brought to you by Kirin Dojo and the Universal Battle League. I would like to thank their owners, respectively Athrin Kazama and Arthur Wingate for putting this production on for the fans. Because of the dual-location nature of this event, both promotions agreed that our traditional arena commentary methods would not be possible. However, I have been chosen to provide brief pre-taped introductions to the matches. Since the matches themselves are actually coming to you live, I will not be providing reactions since this pre-taped version of me will not have watched them. While I tinkered with asking Super NOVA to use their Wrestler-Tron machine to help me see the future, we all agreed that would not be a wise choice given that I am employed by a promotion which used to feature a Space-Time Continuum Title.
We will be featuring six matches tonight, three of them Title bouts. And in a rather shocking first for the Universal Battle League, every Championship will be on the line against the equivalent Title of Kirin Dojo. We have never gone "title for title" before in an inter-promotional show but given the high degree of respect for Kirin Dojo and much of the inertia revolving certain Championships, the honchos agreed that this would be in everyone's best interests. The stakes of Championship have never been higher.
*The camera switches to the official card for tonight's show*
UBL Field Leader Darius vs. KPC World Jr. Champion ZUKAMIKUDO
Golden Tiger vs. El Verde Fantasma vs. Kirin Rider
Rookie Battle Royale: Big Jim, Bones, Wang Gom-Bu, NorthStarLion, Genji Serizawa, HYDRA, Lone Spacewolf, Hedeki Ozuma
Tyler Alexander vs. Hanzori
UBL Battalion Champions JET Hamada/Marauder vs. KPC World Tag Champions RYOMA/Nobu Nakazawa
UBL NEXUS Champion Matt Rivers vs. King of Kirin Champion Joachim
[John:] "We start tonight with the first Championship encounter. Darius, the UBL Field Leader, requested that his match with ZUKAMIKUDO begin the event. He said that even though there are two other matches involving rookies, that he and ZUKAMIKUDO both wish to lead their divisions by example and show the world what they can do. I would expect nothing less from a man who has been so intent on leading the entire Front Lines division since before he even won the vacant title in a tournament earlier this year.
Darius has quite a task ahead of him in ZUKAMIKUDO: A man we have seen victorious on past Battle Formation events. ZUKA is not actually a rookie but then again, we all get the sense that Darius isn't either. But ZUKA, as the World Jr. Champion in Kirin has faced a number of the best wrestlers in that promotion, and in ours. Darius, who is just as much of a mystery as anyone who has ever set food in the UBL ring, seems to be wise beyond his acknowledged years.
In terms of styles, this is going to be one for the ages. ZUKA is a threat from every angle possible, while standing or while on the mat, and is one of the fastest wrestlers I have ever seen. Darius is a technical marvel, really concentrates on his opponent's arms, and appears to have one of those iron wills that go far in our sport. This is a styles clash but both men share the same will to win. Whoever pulls it off will be the one who can adjust best to his opponent and improvise."
Match 1: Darius vs. ZUKAMIKUDO
UBL Field Leader vs. KPC World Jr. Champion
[John:] "Rider is another high profile member of the Kirin roster who has been successful on earlier Battle Formations. And with a name like Kirin Rider, you know he represents the spirit of Kirin Dojo as well as anyone!! He was tapped here to compete with the high flying abilities of El Verde Fantasma and the ferocious rookie, Golden Tiger. Tiger is still new to UBL but has made strong impressions on everyone in numerous UBL Live show victories. (What? They happened, we just didn't air them.) His first broadcast match was a loss to El Verde and the two are scheduled to have a rematch at the next Basic Training. Meanwhile, Drake and Darius wanted to put them against each other here with a member of Kirin Dojo. The thinking was, how does Golden Tiger handle a rivalry? Does he get tunnel vision and only aim for Verde leaving himself vulnerable to Kirin Rider? Or does he respect both men, and the sport itself, enough to do his best to win the match rather then punish Verde for the earlier loss? Kirin Rider is in a strong position here as he is the only one without any bad blood. But that could change if he feels he is being ignored by both UBL wrestlers, and Kirin Dojo disrespected as a result. This is one of the most unpredictable matches of the night."
Match 2: Golden Tiger vs. El Verde Fantasma vs. Kirin Rider
[John:] "Our next match is a Battle Royale consisting largely of rookies to each promotion. The reward for the winner is a guaranteed shot at one of their promotion's Championships. There are no promises as to what any runner-ups will get. If a Kirin wrestler wins tonight and a UBL wrestler is the last one eliminated, Drake has discretion to award them for their longevity...or even punish them for not winning. Though I think that Drake left the building a long time ago. The point is that it's almost Christmas and a holiday bonus wouldn't hurt, all right? Uh, I mean that everyone in this match is playing for just one reward.
Going into this match, UBL has the aggregate size advantage while Kirin has the speed advantage. Of course, Kirin should not assume that applies to everyone. Both Bones and NorthStarLion are incredible adept and dangerous on their feet. But Big Jim and Wang Gom-Bu may make up 1/3 of the entire weight of the participants themselves.
Speaking of Big Jim, he arrived to the arena a little distracted. Earlier in the day, he received a letter and showed it to me in the hopes that the world could help him during this challenging time.
Apparently there is only one abandoned warehouse left in the world, and Big Jim knows which one it is. As for the bathing suit, this may have something to do with Agua the Wet Samoan who attacked Big Jim a few months ago. Whether Big Jim's mind was ever really in this match is up for debate, but it certainly has to be conflicted now.
There are a lot of intense men in this match and I would not be surprised if a fight broke out inside of this wrestling match. We also have not yet seen what Wang Gom-Bu, a man seemingly tailor-made for an encounter like this, could do when faced with so many opponents. I am guessing that it will be "Sherpa Saturday night", for him."
Match 3: Battle Royale for shot at Rookie Title: [--PART 1--] -- [--PART 2--]
Big Jim, Bones, Wang Gom-Bu, NorthStarLion, Genji Serizawa, HYDRA, Lone Spacewolf, Hedeki Ozuma
[John:] "Provided the show did not already end due to a bear revolution, let's continue on. Tyler Alexander is set to face Hanzori in our next encounter. I do not want to unfairly bias this match but it is only right that I offer this full disclosure as I did two months ago during a Circuit Show. Hanzori is my favorite wrestler. When James Ward was berating everyone, including me, during the last Battle Formation, Hanzori came out and smacked him across the face. The fight spilled into the ring and an official match was had, which Hanzori decisively won. I can't get enough of this guy and thank him profusely for his assistance against that blowhard Ward.
As for Tyler Alexander, he has had one of the best Championship years around the world as anyone. He is the current S-CROWN Holder and has won numerous Titles and Tournaments around the world. Many influential and top wrestlers think very highly of him. He is a strong ally to both Athrin Kazama and our own security chief, Goro Yamashita. In fact, those two have been training a lot recently in the UBL Dojo. Tyler has all of the tools needed to become one of the top players in the World Title scene of any promotion. The only thing that has held him back in the past has been his tendency to well, flip the hell out with violence on people when being lured in by groups that don't have his best interests in mind. It seems that he has finally rid himself of those influences and has surrounded himself with people who actually want to help him out and know how to do that. The sky is the limit for Tyler Alexander...but Hanzori is still my favorite. Look, you gotta understand, that jerkface Ward berated me for the better part of a year and routinely physically assaulted me in the booth!! Watching him get the taste knocked out of his mouth was amazing!"
Match 4: Tyler Alexander vs. Hanzori
[John:] 'We turn next to the first of the double main event of this show. Drake Yoshida said it best: the winners of tonight's match will likely be seen as THE Tag Team Champions of the entire world. With all due respect to Julian Caesaro and CominAttraction of the FPCPP, they have not defended their Titles for a while.
But Sun & Moon, the team of RYOMA and Nobu Nakazawa, have gone around the world for the last year collecting Titles of just about every promotion that still competes on a regular basis. They are now TRIPLE Tag Team Champions, possessing the Titles of Super NOVA, Kirin Dojo, and Azteca Pro. The momentum that these two men have is already legendary and they are only a year into it. For them to go on and capture the UBL Battalion Championships would be an astonishing feat. The first "Grand Slam World Tag Team Champions" that I can recall in a very long time.
Of course, that means that a victory over them here would be just as huge. If JET Hamada and the Marauder win this match, not only will they capture the KPC World Tag Titles and become double Champions themselves, but they will have beaten THE most dominant team of the last two years. And honestly, I like their odds in doing so. We have one of the most decorated tag team wrestlers in history, the Marauder, teamed up with one of the most promising rookies in UBL and the world today, JET Hamada.
Furthermore, we already saw a version of this match play out almost exactly a year ago. On December 13th, 2012, during UBL Recrowned, the Marauder and JET Hamada won their Battalion Tag Titles in the final round of a tournament by defeating RYOMA and Kazuo Saji. So is this match a test of just how good Nobu Nakazawa really is? Yes, and no. You can't discount that Nobu's replacement of Kazuo here will likely be a huge benefit for RYOMA. But there is more to it then just that. RYOMA and Kazuo had only teamed for a few months up to that point. RYOMA and Nobu have been teaming for close to 2 years now. Their team has pre-dated RYOMA and Kazuo, and also pre-dated Marauder and JET. There are few people who would doubt that Nobu is a better wrestler, at this point in time, then Kazuo Saji and also a better tag team partner. But there are even fewer who would doubt that Sun & Moon is a far more cohesive team then whatever likely disturbing name Kazuo is calling his partnership with RYOMA. That all said, Marauder and JET have also grown as a team a lot over the last year. They have faced and defeated many difficult opponents.
There are also distractions for both teams. Marauder and JET's friend Yoshiro has been the victim of a harassment campaign by Kurt Sanders and, sometimes, Kazuo Saji. Marauder is the protective sort and hates when one of his allies is being victimized in any way. Meanwhile, RYOMA is currently involved in a "best 2 out of 3" series with Corey O'Brian for the chance to face Matt Rivers for the NEXUS Championship. We know how hard RYOMA has been training for that match and also to remain Tag Team Champion with Nobu. While RYOMA is one of the most spirited men I've ever met, there's only so much training a man can endure before he tires himself out. Especially since he knows what's at stake here. The winner of this match has bragging rights that every team in the world would love to have. But to get them, they will have to embody the spirit of both of these promotions more then their rivals."
Match 5: JET Hamada/Marauder vs. RYOMA/Nobu Nakazawa: [--PART 1--] -- [--PART 2--]
UBL Battalion Champions vs. KPC World Tag Champions
[John:] "And it is now time for the main event. I have to confess, everyone is very surprised by this turn of events. While we have all acknowledged the existence and rise of Joachim, his challenge to Matt Rivers seemingly came out of nowhere. The two had no interaction before September's Circuit show and even then didn't say a word to each other. Yet here we are, with Joachim one match away from claiming UBL's crown jewel for the Destiny organization. This is not just an ordinary match, or even a high stakes title match, this is a potential COUP for the biggest UBL detractors since Jincbuu. And on the other side, we have Matt Rivers ready to strike what could be a fatal blow to Destiny by defeating their top guy and taking his Championship for UBL. This is a match that will move worlds. Joachim holding our Title is tantamount to Destiny capturing our flag and planting its right in our heart.
Orochi Geese sold the UBL to Arthur Wingate to avoid something like this happening. He knew that Destiny loomed in the horizon after Jinchuu. And yet, here we are. Apparently, Destiny really was UBL's destiny. It is up to Matt Rivers to take us in another direction. And I could not hope any more that he does just that. Not only has he been one of our best Champions ever, not only does he represent what UBL is truly about, but he needs to respond to what Joachim said about him. He needs to show that his success wasn't a false narrative. And above all, he needs to defend this promotion from the biggest threat.
How to analyze this match in styles? I honestly can't. Joachim's in ring behavior has not conformed to any analysis. He wins, and knows how to win, and does so against impressive wrestlers like Athrin Kazama and SonnyX. But his style is so unorthodox that it mocks analysis. Matt Rivers is one of the best pure wrestlers on the roster, but he will have to do more then just wrestle. This is a battle of wills. Champion vs. Champion doesn't even tell the whole story. This is for the fate of the promotion that Matt Rivers loves and the future of Joachim's movement that he lives. In the end, one group is going to rise based on the actions of one of the individuals in this match. And I sure hope that I'm on the right side here."
Match 6: Matt Rivers vs. Joachim: [--INTRODUCTIONS--] -- [--MATCH--]
UBL NEXUS Champion vs. King of Kirin World Champion
[John:] "UBL will hold it's next show later this month. It will be a two match Circuit Show and then we will follow that up with Basic Training. I can not speak for Kirin Dojo but I do believe they will be coming to you soon with an event as well. For John Randolph, representing both Kirin Dojo and Universal Battle League, I thank you for tuning in and hope you enjoyed the show!"
