Matsuki Mobile: July 2018
Location: Kyoto, Japan
*The show starts with a commercial for “Matsuki MECH” with a brief montage of the press conference where they were introduced. We get a flashy eye candy logo advertising the new hybrid anime/live action show.*
*The camera shifts to UBL Commentator John Randolph who is sitting in the booth.*
[John:] “On behalf of Matsuki Holdings, hello and welcome to Matsuki Mobile!
I’d like to thank Miss Asako Matsuki for inviting me to call tonight’s show. Given that two of our matches tonight directly affect UBL Championships, it certainly makes sense that I was given this opportunity as the primary voice of the UBL. But I still appreciate the invitation to sit up front and center for what is sure to be an excellent event.
Tonight’s show is punctuated by a main event that was considered by many to be a dream match for years. RYOMA of Matsuki Holdings is challenging Geese Walker who is wrestling just his second match after a completely unexpected return to the wrestling ring. And if that wasn't exciting enough, and it is for me, the winner of their match tonight will earn a shot at Matt Rivers' NEXUS Championship in the Fall! However, that isn’t the only match related to a Championship in my home promotion. The UBL has recently created the Universal Circuit Title – a Championship that will function similarly to a traditional ‘TV Title’ in regard to the frequency of Title defenses and variety of opponents. This Title is being crowned through a Tournament that recently began and tonight we have one of the most exciting first-round matches.
Matsuki Holding representative Tetsu Gushiken will face JET Hamada for the right to advance to the next round in the Title Tournament. Tetsu eliminated JET Hamada by pinning him after a knee strike in a Battle Royale at Base 11 which originally seeded this tournament. JET was the only wrestler whose elimination was by pinfall rather than being thrown over the top rope and it appears he took that hard. Although both men have a lot of respect for each other, JET is determined to even the score here and has looked more technically proficient and multifaceted than he ever has before. His training with Barton Miller, both in the gym and the ring, has produced impressive results. JET and Tetsu rival each other in submission expertise but JET has the edge in throwing ability as a result of his judo background. He utilizes high impact and sudden, snapping throws that target the arm, neck, and back. He has also mastered suplexes such as a 'sleeper suplex' called "Fly the Friendly Skies" that emphatically won him and Barton Miller the Universal Battalion Championships years ago.
Tetsu has the clear edge in striking ability, specifically his increasingly lethal knees which he is adept at hitting from different situations. Tetsu is also equally determined to win this match and continue a steady rise to the top since joining the UBL a few years ago. The highlight of that rise came at the Base 10 Tour last April when he eliminated NEXUS Champion Matt Rivers in a Battle Royale and earned a shot at his NEXUS Title. Tetsu did not wish to claim his shot: instead wanting to compete for the Universal Circuit Title when it was announced. He wanted to be the first one to hold that title, due to the nature of its defenses, so that he could follow the legacy of Matt Rivers in being a fighting Champion.
JET isn’t a stranger to Matt’s accomplishments and influence either though. In fact, it was Matt who first recruited JET to the UBL and placed him with his mentor Barton. The two train together consistently whereas Tetsu’s main training partner is his mentor RYOMA, who is arguably the biggest rival to Matt Rivers. However, all of these men have a high degree of mutual respect which is why JET, Tetsu, and many others are calling this the most anticipated match-up of the tournament. Let’s see if it can live up to those expectations and produce a winner that can go the distance toward the Title."

[John:] "You have to give both men credit here for expanding their repertoires and taking risks. I saw both of them evolve their usual strategies and attack from different angles than what I have seen over the years of covering them. However, JET may have taken too much of a risk, or too much time in the pursuit of it, when attempting that top rope frog splash. I think that missed splash sealed the deal for him as Tetsu consistently capitalized afterward with the Fisherman Suplex and then that deadly dual running knee combination. Tetsu advances to the second round but JET should be proud of his efforts.”
Tetsu Gushiken (O) ”ECHO Knee” - 15:13] (X) JET Hamada
[John:] “Tetsu is waiting for JET to stand up and offers his hand. JET doesn’t hesitate for a second and shakes it, despite feeling what has to be massive frustration. He nods to Tetsu and claps his hands to congratulate him. Both men are truly class acts and I know that Matt Rivers and UBL ownership think highly of them. I’m sure that JET will get an opportunity to challenge for the Universal Circuit Title in the future, if not also the Universal Battalion Title with Barton.”
*An advertisement airs for the “Emergence” show scheduled for this month!*
[John:] “Next we turn to a match featuring wrestlers from the dynamic Sierra Wrestling All Stars promotion. The Matsuki Holdings representative for this encounter is Kazuo ‘Chrome’ Saji who is teaming with SWA superstar Connor Cipris. Connor leads a group named BHB which Saji is an active member of. For those OG-Joshi and 'ubble' fans in attendance, Lina is also a mainstay in that group. BHB is a fun-loving bunch, which is an admittedly obvious statement considering Saji’s membership. They are trying to bring positivity to wrestling and resist many of the ‘doomsday villain’ groups that seem to permeate this great sport. Tonight, Kazuo and Connor will face two members of one of the aforementioned villain groups which have threatened SWA. They are called the ‘Brotherhood of Fallen Angels.’ No ambiguity there, these guys are out to dominate and destroy the SWA. Unfortunately, for Saji, he is their next target. At the upcoming Emergence PPV, Kazuo is set to defend his newly won SWA Aftermath Championship against Samael Tangaroa, the leader of the Brotherhood.
Samael is an absolute monster who towers over most wrestlers in the world, especially Kazuo. Their match will be a difficult challenge one for Saji and tonight may offer an interesting type of preview. Connor is the BHB leader for a reason: he’s essentially a prodigy of professional wrestling. In fact, one of the ways that Kazuo shed his years-long reputation of infamy and tomfoolery was engaging in an exciting series of matches with Connor that raised both of their profiles. Connor is one of the top junior heavyweights in the world and a contender for any Title in SWA or even UBL if he ever chose. In fact, he showed up in UBL last Spring to support Matsuki Holdings and Kazuo against Destiny. As for Blaze, the footage I’ve seen of him is very impressive. He can take over a match entirely by himself due to his mix of technical acumen and penchant for brawling. Blaze is also a crafty teammate with a great sense of timing and is completely dedicated to the glory of their group. A few nights ago he seconded Aaron Wolff, another member of the Brotherhood, in an attempt to win Kazuo's Title before he even got to Emergence. Although Kazuo won a very close match, Blaze effectively made his presence known on the outside. The fact that he is anchored by Samael in this match, and in their group, is a scary proposition for BHB.
The keys to victory for BHB are utilizing quick tags and their speed advantage, especially over Samael. I also want to remind everyone of the first Matsuki Mobile event from 2016 when Kazuo actually knocked out the behemoth Matthias with a ‘Chrome Splitter’ head kick. He will not back down against Samael but he’ll have to match his determination with effective attacks. As for the Brotherhood, isolating Saji is probably their best bet given how hot he runs with emotions. If he’s having a tough time and gets frustrated, he’s less likely to be able to turn the tide of momentum compared to Connor who is far more poised and even-tempered. Kazuo is the first one to say he’s hot-blooded as a compliment but that isn’t always the way to win matches, especially in tag situations when the other team has you contained. However, I think that Kazuo sees himself as the underdog in the upcoming match against Samael so I have no doubt that he is going to want to send a message here. Hopefully that message isn’t that he’ll be easy pickins at Emergence. Let’s get to the ring to find out!”

[John:] "I know Samael deserves to get the lion's share of the credit here but you absolutely have to respect what Blaze did to clinch victory for his team. He sacrificed his leg against Connor, a very debilitating kicker, to ensure that Samael’s pin over Kazuo wasn’t broken up. The Brotherhood certainly doesn’t have noble intentions but you can not deny how strong their teamwork and unity was in this match. BHB made an impressive comeback at the end, with Saji almost finishing Samael, but the Brotherhood’s early onslaught set the tone in this match. By the time BHB had the Brotherhood in trouble, they didn’t have much left in the tank. And that lariat by Samael absolutely crushed the neck and windpipe area of Saji. I don't know whether the pain will bother him more than the likelihood he won't be able to talk for a few days though."
Connor Cipris/Kazuo Saji (X) [Original Lariat - 26:07] (O) Samael Tangaroa/Blaze
[John:] "More seriously, I also don’t know how Kazuo is going to survive at Emergence, let alone successfully defend his Aftermath Championship. He showed some signs that he can weather the storm and temporarily stun Samael, but that encounter is going to be as uphill a battle for Saji as he has ever wrestled in his career.”
*An advertisement airs for UBL’s “Lunar Eclipse of the Heart” scheduled for October 14, 2018.*
[John:] “And now it’s time for the main event of the evening. RYOMA faces the returning Geese Walker. As I said before, the winner of this match goes on to ‘Lunar Eclipse of the Heart’ to challenge for the UBL NEXUS Championship currently held by Matt Rivers. Both men have legitimate chances to beat Matt given the historic careers that they have had so far.
A few years ago, RYOMA and Nobu Nakazawa achieved something unprecedented. They held Tag Team Championships from four entirely separate promotions at the same time: Super NOVA, Kirin Pro, Azteca Pro, and the UBL. They were essentially a dynasty in the tag team division. Of note is that RYOMA and Nobu were never defeated for the Universal Battalion Tag Team Championships, choosing to relinquish them after defeating everyone in the tag division for years.
However, RYOMA’s singles career has also been full of notable accomplishments. He was the Azteca Pro Warrior Champion for a long time. He also competed, but narrowly lost to the legendary Corey O’Brian in a very close 'best two out of three' match series for what became the UBL World Heavyweight Championship. One of RYOMA's earliest accomplishments was putting on the match of 2011 against Matt Rivers for his Field Leader Title. RYOMA lost but made an impression on Matt, on UBL, and on the entire wrestling world. There is no question that RYOMA was considered a top contender for the NEXUS Championship even before he made his challenges to Matt Rivers for ‘Lunar Eclipse’ and Geese for tonight.
RYOMA’s defensive resiliency was established in his matches with Matt Rivers and Corey O’Brian and have become highly feared and respected in the UBL. His offensive skills include the most powerful lariats in the business today. His ’ECHO Lariat’ finisher maneuver was honed over the past few years and can finish any opponent. In the past year he has made it even more dangerous by making it harder for the opponent to predict. His elevated powerbomb is one of the strongest in the UBL given his height and strength. He also possesses a variety of punishing exploders and backdrops, including ones from the top rope. From the start of the match, he attacks his opponents’ chest and neck with chops that are as fierce and blistering as any I have ever seen in the business. His warrior mentality and spirit to compete mean that RYOMA is always within reach of finishing a match. He is one of the few men who can stare Geese down across the ring and not take a step back or worry about the consequences. RYOMA is in his prime and has not yet reached the ceiling for his potential.
Geese Walker is in a very different stage of his career as he recently returned to the ring after a seven-year retirement and competed non-stop for a grueling twelve years before that. His shocking return this year came at the "ARENA Rising event," a re-unification of the legendary FPCPP promotion where Geese won his first World Heavyweight Championship. Geese returned at ARENA Rising to defeat Sonny X, one of his biggest rivals and a former World Champion in his own right. Sonny X defeated Geese in the first FPCPP Championship match, which took place in 2008, delaying Geese’s Title victory for two years. The fact that Geese’s first match back from retirement was to face a former rival is not lost on many on the UBL roster. However, he returns tonight because he wishes to compete for the NEXUS Championship and prove a point to RYOMA: that Geese and his generation will not leave the wrestling world until they are forced out by the current one.
Although Geese was not actively wrestling for seven years, it was clear from his return against Sonny that he has still been tirelessly training. I didn’t notice any semblance of ring rust on him. If anything, he seems to have evolved his style to one that fits his psychological and physical maturation. He also seems a lot bulkier and stronger than he used to be. I would guess that he still has the speed advantage over RYOMA but Geese may also have the strength one as well. He has added a very high impact lariat to his arsenal as well as the Imperial Intervention’ STO which is a tribute to Julian Caesaro. One tactic that Geese utilizes which RYOMA ignores is the usage of submissions intended to finish matches, despite both men using them early to wear down opponents. Geese currently has 4 submissions that can defeat an opponent which target the neck and back. RYOMA will have to guard against the gradual wear and tear of his body, especially his arm which he needs as his primary weapon. But the greatest assets Geese have are his understanding of combat, his refusal to lose, and his ability to intimidate opponents. Many opponents have mentally cracked in the ring when being unable to defeat him, only to then completely fall apart when they see him smirking right back at them as if the match just started. Geese’s sense of poise and confidence is unassailable. Although he may have distanced himself from the shouts of chaos and propaganda, there is no doubt that he will attempt some mind games to control the pace of this match and RYOMA’s emotions.
Well, I sure hope I'm being paid by the word. In any case, it’s now time for introductions. Given the connection that both men have had to Japan and Kyoto, in particular, I think the roof is going to be blown off this place when they each come out. As for me, I’ll return after the entrances and the match. I’m going to just enjoy this as a fan now.”

*The camera pans to the commentary booth where John Randolph is standing and clapping. He then sits down.*
[John:] "In a battle of the lariats, Geese had the one that triumphed tonight. His new ’Storm Bringer’ turned RYOMA upside-down. It ended one of the most high impact and best matches I have seen in the past few years. Neither man gave any ground or quarter and Geese had to put RYOMA down forcefully to end this. However, you have to give RYOMA all the credit in the world for his efforts. This was a war and RYOMA’s reputation as a warrior only improved, in my estimation. As with his matches against Matt and Corey, RYOMA will continue to get stronger as his spirit is forged in battles like this.”
RYOMA (X) [”Storm Bringer" – 19:52] (O) Geese Walker
*As Geese celebrates, RYOMA slowly pulls himself up to his feet using the ropes in the corner. RYOMA takes a step forward and extends his hand. Geese looks around as the crowd cheers for him to take it. He starts to pantomine ‘clapping and stamping his feet in rhythm’ and smirks at the crowd. But a serious expression returns to his face once he looks back at RYOMA who hasn’t moved an inch since offering his hand. The crowd falls silent as Geese walks forward. He calmly but deliberately places his hand on RYOMA’s shoulder then shouts out: “Earn it by wanting more. Stop fighting for the recognition. Fight for the victory!” RYOMA looks down at his hand for a while seemingly deep in thought. He retracts his handshake offer, nods as Geese, and then leaves the ring.”
[John:] “To many, that could be seen as a disrespectful reaction to RYOMA’s handshake offer. However, I truly believe Geese was trying to help RYOMA there. In either case, RYOMA seemed to take the advice of a veteran to heart. I would certainly be interested in what Matt Rivers thought of that. At ‘Lunar Eclipse of the Heart’ it will be a battle between different eras. Geese Walker will return to the UBL after a seven-year hiatus to fight for a Championship he never sought in the past because it only really gained prominence after he left. Geese Walker, the man once synonymous with UBL, will face the man who became the heart and soul of UBL over the past 8 years: Matt Rivers. The NEXUS Championship is on the line but, really, this is about the future of this entire promotion. I look forward to being there and presenting it all to you. Meanwhile, UBL will continue bringing you the Universal Circuit Title Tournament over the next few months as well as other action across the promotion.
This is John Randolph and on behalf of UBL, SWA, and Matsuki Holdings, thank you for watching.”
