[John:] "Hello folks. Continuum-1 is on the horizon and, with it, the official start of the Universal Championship league. Over the next week we will be airing pre-recorded segments with many of the wrestlers in the league, organized by Block, who have not yet gone on record as to their thoughts. We are going to hear about their goals, expectations, and messages for their expected competitors. But before I turn it over to the wrestlers, I am going to first examine any specific history that is shared by the participants of each block."
Rivalry Round-Up
Block A: Alicia Gordon, Kurt Sanders, Tsaoring Chou, Wang Gom-Bu, Jason Hyde
In the past few months, Kurt has drawn the ire of Alicia Gordon by stealing the OG-Joshi World Championship Title belt and patronizingly offering it to her at "Catalyst" in place of her earned UBL NEXUS Championship.
Kurt also cheated Wang Gom-Bu during their match in round 2 of the Universal Circuit Title Tournament. And, although he doesn't have documented history with Tsaoring Chou, many have heard Kurt intentionally use outdated language referring to his background in a (successful) attempt to upset people. Wang and Tsaoring also have history of the more competitive kind. They faced each other in the first round of the Universal Circuit Title Tournament. Chou, the number eight seed, almost upset Wang, the number one seed. It is said that these two have actually gained each other's respect over the past few years due to their match and time spent in the UBL dojo training. We'll see how that is tested in the league.
Alicia Gordon is the one only in this Block that has history with Jason Hyde. The two were originally on friendly terms due to Alicia's friendship with Jason's sister, Angelica. Jason, Alicia, and Thunder Strike then presented a united front against the Orochi Army in 2008. But then Jason joined Jinchuu in 2011. Not only did he team with the brother of Alicia's hated enemy Robin, but he also helped injure Thunder Strike: Alicia's best friend. Jason renounced Jinchuu before they were eliminated by Geese but one wonders if there is any lingering resentment. Furthermore, Jason holds the highest profile victories and most success in UBL in Block A aside from Alicia Gordon. So, personal or not, there has to be a sense of rivalry there.
Block B: Cosmic K*I*D, RYOMA, Wonderland, Brandr Hoff, Thomas Mills
This is the only Block that does not have any specific pre-existing rivalries. In fact, aside from a match a few years ago between RYOMA and Wonderland that the latter won, none of these wrestlers have ever competed against each other. As a result, I will talk more about their prospects in this league based on their careers so far.
All five of them have held singles Championships, but only one of them have done so in the UBL. Cosmic K*I*D won the "Space-Time Continuum Championship" multiple times and was the winner of the inaugural Universal Championship League in 1999. However, he left UBL after that and only returned as part of a shadow participant in Jinchuu along with James Ward. He lost a World Heavyweight Championship match against Corey O'Brian, making him the second wrestler on this Block to lose to Corey along with RYOMA.
Despite RYOMA not winning any singles gold here, falling short against Corey and Matthew Rivers, he was part of perhaps the most dominant tag team in UBL history: Sun & Moon. We heard from RYOMA recently in a Matsuki Holdings press conference so he is exempt from this round-up.
Brandr Hoff is coming off a disappointing 2019 with losses to Kazuo Saji and Sirius Mask...later revealed to be Alicia Gordon. A growing sense of frustration and urgency has entered into his personality of late. The same goes for Thomas Mills who can't seem to buy a win despite his family's money. Although a former Champion in the Prestige Paywall Wrestling promotion, the potential many saw in him here has not yet been realized.
As for Wonderland, I have no idea why he is even here because he refuses to speak to the press. But make no mistake about it - you have to label him a top contender for this entire league, let alone Block. We're talking about a former FPCPP World Championship who dethroned Geese Walker in the prime of his "Orochi Geese" campaign. From what I've heard, Wonderland hasn't lost a step. Say what you will, I still think he looks like former UBL NEXUS Champion Karl Wunderlin...
Block C: Corey O'Brian, Joachim, Tetsu Gushiken, Charles Langford, THRASH Ogawa
It's a toss-up between which Block has more wrestlers that dislike each other: this one or Block D.
Corey O'Brian has no previous history with anyone here except for Joachim but that history speaks volumes. Joachim was a highly ranked member of Destiny around the time Corey's best friend, Xander Starr, got brutally attacked by Agent 1: a member of Gauntlet Security working for Destiny. While Joachim has continually disavowed any connection to this attack and put distance between himself and Destiny, Corey still does not seem to trust him. The two faced off in a very violent triple threat match last two with two Championships on the line. One fall ended when Agent 1 lured Corey away from the ring for a count-out. Questions remain about Joachim's role in that.
Hate is a strong word, and I'm not sure it's one that's in Tetsu Gushiken's vocabulary. But, if it is, he may feel that toward Charles Langford. Not only did Charles break the arm of Tetsu's mentor RYOMA last year, but Charles is also the mentor, attorney, and enabler of Kurt Sanders. Charles has supported Kurt while doing such things as stealing Tetsu's Universal Circuit Title belt away for close to a year. Furthermore, in his role as attorney, Charles played a significant role in having Kazuo Saji, one of Tetsu's best friends, suspended from the UBL for 9 months. Saji, for his part, defeated Charles a few weeks ago as part of Sierra Wrestling Association's World Open league: earning himself a measure of revenge. We know that Tetsu and Charles will each place bulls-eyes on each other.
THRASH Ogawa is the only man on the Continuum Tour roster to also be on the Dimensional Tour roster. That is because he is the current Universal Circuit Champion. Time will tell whether "pulling double duty" will slow him down or further motivate him by allowing him to fight everyone he can get his hands on. As for rivalries, he has one friendly and one considerably less. THRASH was in the same match where Charles broke RYOMA's arm and he's also the one who finally defeated Tetsu for the Title. However, there is no ill will toward THRASH and Tetsu. To the contrary, the two seem to respect each other very much after the series of matches they had. But as THRASH does not respect Kurt, I believe he won't hold back against Charles. I also hear that Jasper Woodruff has been making noise, and that means a lot of noise, about challenging for THRASH's Title. THRASH seems to be in the middle of the Matsuki Holdings vs. 3 of a Kind feud and I don't think he minds that one bit.
Block D: Geese Walker, Matthew Rivers, Kazuo Saji, James Ward, Bak Fu
There will be blood spilled in this Block, I have no doubt about it.
Geese Walker has finally returned to the UBL a year after suffering a severe, behavior-altering, concussion at the hands of Matthew Rivers during his shocking defection to Destiny. I have asked Arthur many times who decided to put these two in the same block and he just smiled and said "karma did." Now, I have no idea what state of mind Matthew Rivers is in at the moment. Ruby Moreno, who recruited Matthew over to Destiny, has left UBL as she promised Robin Walker. No one seems to be 'controlling' Matthew who appeared less than capable of independent thought in the past year. Whether any of this will give Geese pause from seeking revenge is another matter.
But it's not just Matthew Rivers that Geese has a bone to pick with, it's James Ward. Despite being one of the public and private architects of the Jinchuu plan, James never had to face direct comeuppance against Geese. Mr. Clyde and Mr. Figaro ended Ward's part of the plan, along with Cosmic K*I*D's. But Geese ended Jinchuu by defeating and then, more crucially, reconciling with Kyle Walker. This league is the first chance that Geese will have to directly confront James Ward. Keep in mind that Ward had a crucial role in one of the most grisly attacks in UBL history on Geese: using his old "Centurion" character helmet to smash him in the head as Kyle put him in the hospital. Geese is set to face James much earlier than Matthew. So, if I was Rivers, I'd pay very close attention to whether or not Ward has to get carted out of the arena and put on the permanently injured list.
But we're not done here by a long shot. Kazuo Saji also has some history with Geese and Matthew Rivers. Saji entered the world of wrestling around the time Geese retired. It seems there was some early hostility there leading to a few confrontations. While I've heard that it has been mostly smoothed over by the passing of years and an earning of Geese's respect, there may still be some lingering bad blood. Saji has a lot in common with Geese if you look at career trajectories and the way that Matsuki Holdings played a constructive role in Saji's career much as Orochi Army did for Geese. As for Rivers and Saji, the two had a rivalry as part of Saji's role in Front Lines. Rivers would repeatedly test him and challenge him to be his best. Saji could never get a victory over Rivers and Rivers claimed it was because Saji was not taking his career seriously enough. That was over 5 years ago though and Saji has significantly matured. However, now it is Saji who is disappointed by Rivers' actions over the past year.
Bak Fu and James Ward, as the Centurion, were each participants of the last Universal Champions League which took place in 2007. Although no direct hostility resulted, Bak defeated James in ten seconds. We know that James participated in that league as his old comedic Centurion character to lull Geese into a false sense of security. So even if that loss to Bak helped retain Ward's cover, he still may have resentment against Bak Fu for the way in which it went down. After all, plan or not, getting put down in ten seconds by Bak's Hellbound finisher doesn't sound like something one would reminisce about, provided they even remember it. Geese and Bak Fu also faced off in the league and to a controversial result. Geese kicked Bak in the throat with a sharp edge in his boot toward the end of their match. This caused excessive bleeding and led to a submission victory for Geese using the Orochi Clutch. That isn't something one can do to Bak and expect him to forget. Furthermore, Bak was part of a general war between Geese and the Clan McLanahan which dated back to McPro. While Geese is no longer the same tyrant he was, Bak Fu isn't one to fully put the past behind him.
So there you have it! Will the competitors be motivated or distracted by these years of rivalries? It is hard to tell but they will undoubtedly color the pursuit of the Infinite Continuum Championship.
Join us later this week as we hear from some of the Block A participants!
