History
Matt Rivers is constantly bombarded with one question: "Is that your real name?" Considering he was a weather man for years preceding his UBL arrival, it's an understandable inquiry. Matt studied meteorology at Boston University but his desire to get back into athletics cut his weather career short. After finally breaking away from his weather job, he traveled the New England indie wrestling circuit for a year, honing his craft. Matt was then discovered by a UBL scout and invited to try out on a Circuit Show. Unfortunately his spot was unceremoniously taken by another wrestler and Matt was placed on the Front Lines roster with other new wrestlers in order to prove his worth which he did for over a year.
In November of 2010, Matt Rivers had the chance to challenge for a position on the Main Reserve Roster but instead elected to stay on the Front Lines in order to test himself against hungry and varied competition. Drake liked his reasoning and, needing a more clear organization for that roster, made him "Front Lines Field Leader". Matt is humbled but also proud to be the first Field Leader and hopes to defend it while helping the entire roster learn and improve.
Many consider him to be the represent the heart of UBL competition and spirit after the way he defended it against Jinchuu in 2011. Not only did he face them down when they threatened his friends, but he also went above and beyond as a Field Leader to bolster the division with talent and put on Basic Training shows to keep healthy competition flowing.
When the UBL moved to England in 2012 under Arthur Wingate's ownership, Matt Rivers had the opportunity to compete for the vacant NEXUS Championship in a tournament. On December 13th, 2012 during the Re-Crowned PPV Matt defeated Charles Langford to become the new NEXUS Champion! And since he never lost his Field Leader Title, he became the first man in UBL history to hold two singles titles at once making him the undisputed Champion! Matt will have to relinquish his Field Leader Title once a new Leader is chosen but for now, Matt was at the highest point in his wrestling career!
After nearly a year of successfully defending his NEXUS Title against all comers and doing all ne could to help UBL, he was aggressively called out and challenged by Destiny member Joachim. The two met at Battle Formation but Matt was unable to keep Joachim down despite using just about all of his finishers. Joachim won the match and the NEXUS Title, handing Matt his first loss in years. After the show, Matt was abducted by J.U.S.T.I.C.E. for unknown reasons. It appears that the end of 2013 was as bad for Matt as the end of 2012 was good for him. No stranger to adversity, Matt has his work cut out for him to not only regain his Title, but not "disappear" courtesy of Thunder Strike.
Matt turned up at the Walker ranch in Deadwood, South Dakota. Orochi Geese, Holly, and Kyle Walker agreed to train him to be ready for his next encounter with Joachim. Matt stayed with the Walkers for over six months cultivating a "Flow like Water" philosophy that would allow him to be unpredictable and even smoother in the ring.
Matt Rivers triumphantly returned at Destiny Drive to defeat Joachim for the NEXUS Championship!!
Style and Personality
Matt comes from an amateur wrestling background. He combines an acumen for neck-based submission holds with a quick, high impact suplex offense. He hopes to become even more proficient with various submissions and further improve his throws and slams. He favors a direct approach to his holds: believing the most effective ones are those easily and quickly applied so he can focus on the pressure rather then the application. During the year of training in England, he has found ways to target the arm in addition to the neck. This has made his moves that much more dangerous and difficult to break out of.
Matt believes very firmly in playing by the rules and has a bit of a short temper when others don't, especially if it stands in the way of his success or others who share his principles. He doesn't like seeing people rewarded for cheating and has a tremendous distaste for the generally flamboyant and ridiculous circles of the industry. Matt has gained a little more tolerance for hijinks over the last two years since he's seen far worse in the realm of violence. But he still believes pro wrestling should be a dignified competition rather then a fruit salad. He keeps his head down, his nose clean, and his eye on the prize. When asked what he hopes to achieve in professional wrestling - he wants to master his craft and make his family proud by his behavior.
